These are all great tips. The only suggestion I have is that I've found equipping one of your Tac BOs with an Exploit weapon works really well. I've definitely seen the AI use this set-up effectively an exploit an exposed enemy when I'm busy dealing with something else.

He's certainly better than the last guy in the office, but I have my problems with him. I definitely get the feeling he takes our entire community for granted and treats us like a gigantic GayTM.

You need the actual image link :) it would end in .jpg. I'm on my phone but try going to that site and there should be an option for a link to it with the .jpg. If not, try right clicking on the full size image and press copy image link

If you want emblems quickly on fleet actions (big dig,and such) and do not want/need high power gear from them, change instances. You will end up in the lower tier game (ltcmdr or such) and your admiral can waltz through with almost total impunity.

Re: STO Helpful Hints

Talking to myself, but I thought of another one:

Give your BOs Expose weapons, and use an Exploit weapon yourself. This is simplified, but basically there's no point in your whole team using expose weapons, or your whole team using exploit weapons. You need both.

Some others that may seem obvious, but totally aren't if you're just starting out:

Match your ship weapons to your captain's weapon skills. If you already have 9 training points in phasers, and none in tetryon weapons, try to find some good phaser weapons on the exchange.

The same goes for matching tactical consoles to ship's weapons. This is also kind of obvious, but there are consoles for weapon flavors (phaser, disruptor, tetryon), and weapon types (beam, cannon, torpedo). A pre-fire chamber won't help out a ship with all beam arrays and torpedoes.

You get a free respec at each major promotion, so don't be afraid to use it. Did you accidentally assign training points to mines, when you never equip mines? You can fix it by visiting the trainer at the center of ESD (among other places). You can also buy respec tokens in the C-Store.

When you're just starting out, get a tac BO with high yield torpedoes. This is totally a matter of opinion. When I first started in open-beta, I loved beam overload (even though it was bugged and your beams sometimes stopped working completely). Then I discovered high yield torps. Hit an average enemy with a tachyon beam from 10 km, fire your high yields, and then quickly broadside them with beams, and you can often take the ship out with just that first volley, even as a lowly Lt.

Here's one I read recently, but haven't really tried yet. Get your BOs to mount a frontal assault, while you sneak off to the side or back of the group for maximum flanking damage. You can do this by setting waypoints for your team. Also if you tell your team to attack first, they'll draw most of the aggro, leaving you free to flank. (Learn the team and team member commands available to you as icons by your team members in the upper left corner of the screen.)

Anyone else? Helpful hints for our newbie brothers and sisters?

Re: SWTOR/STO healing from a canon perspective

November 05 2010
I've been sort of taking the healing thing for granted when thinking about SWTOR. I hadn't really put much thought towards it; I suppose there will be force healing and perhaps medic healing as there was in SWG.

My biggest concern with SWTOR, right now, is the fact that they have addressed the fans' desires for space combat by installing a tunnel / rail shooter (a-la Starfox) into the game and calling it "Cinematic space combat". I'm hoping that it's wholly optional, but I've been hearing rumblings that it is not.

I know it sounds silly, but make sure you are pressing save on the left. with this update, the save and the cancel button got switched. I used to cancel my big long posts all the time and realized i was pressing cancel. If still not, PM me the URL link to the image and I can set it for ya :)

I know where you're coming from, but with respect, I have to disagree - it would be a blatant falsehood to suggest that KoS members can/should be actively upholding equality for all people at all times. It's a gaming guild, not an activist organisation. Though I'm sure most/all KoS members support the principle of universal equality (albeit in different ways), the guild will be LGBT-focused, and we should make that explicit or justifiably face the charge of supporting some (LGBT) equalities more than others.

Also, to require 'duties' of members is a bit much. Again, KoS is not an activist group. What could the guild really be expected to do to uphold equality for all? And whose vision of equality would that be?

That's why I have to fall back on providing a safe, friendly space for those of all sexualities and gender identities - it's all a guild can reasonably try to provide. To say that we're going to do anything else would just be revealed to be a lie in the end.

SWTOR/STO healing from a canon perspective

November 04 2010
So my boyfriend is a big, BIG Star Wars fan, as are some of my mates. I'm not especially knowledgeable - I've seen the films and read a couple of books in preparation for SWTOR. Having explained to them how healing will work in SWTOR, none of those Star Wars buffs I know have responded positively. Apparently there's little canonic evidence of the Force-based in-combat healing we'll see in the game, and the Smuggler/Agent mechanic of shooting kalta darts sounds silly even to me as a relative SW noob.

I responded similarly to healing in STO - it's all really a bit of handwaving to bypass the fact that few of the healing abilities we're given work in the context of Star Trek. Medical tricorders, triage, etc just don't work like that in the TV shows or films.

I understand the need for this from a design perspective... kind of... but this kind of cognitive dissonance does somewhat spoil my experience. And it also makes me wonder why the designers didn't take the opportunity suggested by SW and ST lore (can you say 'lore' for SF?) to ditch the traditional healing models, as GW2 seems to be trying to do.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?
