This is a pretty neat contest. I am excited to see what people come up with. Especially if the winner has a design similar in style to what we're used to (saucer with two nacelles) or if it's a dramatically different new design entirely.

How does not being able to enter the contest make you a second-class subscriber? Your ability to enter it has nothing to do with whether you're subscribed to the game (at least, they haven't said that's a requirement yet).

Also, if this is going to drive you from STO, then I wouldn't play any games that are headquartered out of the United States. Due to the laws Brandon mentioned, this is going to be the case if any US-based MMO ever runs a contest.

Hal, I'm sure it is really frustrating to hear that it is US only. The only reason this is so is because of International Contest Laws. It's happened with all of their contests, even with Mark and my podcast. Don't let it get to you :) it's nothing they or anyone can change :(

Edit: if it were EU only, it would suck but i am an international business major so I kinda understand. I even told myself before I remembered it was US only, "I can't wait to see Hal's submission!" major boo

-sigh-

I have to think long and hard about this. I told myself strongly after the absolute shambles that was Warhammer Online that I'd never allow myself to feel like a second class subscriber again.

I planned to play on the US server of any game that didn't give Europeans a service of equal standard but since STO is one server I didn't have to worry about that here. But then this happens.

I've read the reasons given by the devs and they are all perfectly logical but let me ask you guys this; would you accept this competition if it was open only to the Europeans and you were excluded because of some difficulty in law translation. I doubt it'd go down so well if the Americans were excluded.

The none-US on the official forums will kick up a fuss but it'll blow over Cryptic know that and I accept that but I have to personally think long and hard about my future because of this.

As I said, I promised myself I'd never let myself feel like this any more and I feel it today.

Yeah, what Seannewboy said. Additionally, there's an official 4-part comic that was released just before the most recent Star Trek movie that explains the events in the original universe leading up to the Hobus supernova. In it, Data is captain of the Enterprise-E.

Also, he's mentioned as captain in both STO loading screens and the Path to 2409 entries.

Didn't Data die at the end of nemesis?

Yes but all of his engrams were placed into the newest found soong android B4(?), b4 could become data in time, as if it was a case of amnesia.

Quick addendum to this: the Design Hangar doesn't exist yet. The contest starts December 9, when Cryptic will make a available a 'special tool' that will allow us to submit our design.

http://www.startrekonline.com/enterprise

I have to say, I'm pretty excited. It's a long shot my design(s) would get picked, but man... the bragging rights alone would be awesome. Can you imagine, being able to say "I designed the Enterprise-F"?

However, I wonder why they're even doing this. Last time I checked, the game is still saying that Data is captain of the Enterprise-E, which implies that ship still exists. I wonder if there's going to be an upcoming mission where the Enterprise is destroyed?

I'm so excited about this, it sounds very fun. I love how they are totally integrating your companions / crew into working with or for you. That's something I kind of think is lacking in STO. You have BOFFs, but they are really just avatars of some extra skills for you to use.

Re: Favorite, non-conventional, Sci-Fi Movies

November 17 2010
This is a tough topic to reply to! I've done some research in order to remember some names that I've forgotten, and here they are:

2046 - because of my fascination with Asian films.

The Island - I thought this one was pretty good, but no one talks about it!

The Fountain - because of the book... very good, and very unconventional in my opinion :)

Dark City - an ex showed me this film a few years back, and it was amazing!

Equilibrium - my bf made me watch this one, and I loved it :)

Aeon Flux - very unconventional, very good, and no one talks about it! :P

Planet of the Dinosaurs - just for fun in this list... I loved this one as a kid for some reason. Probably because I loved space and dinosaurs, so it was a catch-all ;) It's fun to watch (you can see the whole thing on YouTube) but not in a serious way lol.

My favorite sci-fi film is still The Fifth Element. I just love Milla Jovovich and Bruce Willis. Gary Oldman is pretty awesome too :side:

So there you have it, some unconventional sci-fi films and my personal fav. I'm sure there are plenty more that I can't think of right now. I've seen too many movies :S
