ARRRG, You could have put a spoiler warning in the title of your thread. Why even the title of the thread is a spoiler grrr@you.

However since I didn't read the post and you reminded me to watch the new episode, I'll forgive you just this once. :silly:

Never got into Warehouse 13, but I had to look it up. Sadly the galleries at Siffy appear to be offline, so headed over to IMDB. I enjoyed Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen, the kinda cute, kinda nerdy photographer. Never though of him much as "eye candy" (unlike his brother, Shawn, who was the hottest "cold" man in town). How's he pulling it off? I may have to take a look at the first couple of episodes this season.

Jack Harkness from Dr. Who/Torchwood would be my ideal portrayal of a gay character if it weren't for the fact he isn't technically "gay" on the show, just omnisexual ("You people and your labels."). It would be nice to see a non-stereotypical, strong, gay character. Just hope Aaron's up to the task.

Haven't had a chance to watch EP 2, yet, but...

WTH, first Bones, now Warehouse 13 has turned into a Prius commercial?

Ooooh the hatred that flows through my veins right now, you could bottle it.

Jinx (and his special power) was REALLY annoying at first, but I feel that was more the writing and direction than the actor. By the end of the episode he was pretty endearing. (Though I don't really feel I'll ever not find the whole special power not annoying. At least Lattimer's power isn't thrown up in your face with such frequency.)

SPOILER - SyFy's Wharehouse 13 goes Gay

July 19 2011
Uhmmmm....Spoilers below

The newest episode of Warehouse 13's new season, titled "Trials," had an interesting surprise.

Last weeks season opener introduced a new male lead addition to the cast named Steve Jinks, nicknamed "Jinx" who works for the ATF. After Jinx gets introduced to artifact hunting, he gets recruited to the Warehouse by another show original cast member, and the plot ensues. Aside from initial character development, and the mission/episode main plot, little is revealed about Jinx other then surface details. He is a Buddhist and he hates lies (watch the show for more).

But....low and behold this week's episode has a bit of newbie teasing by another long time cast member, Claudia. During a steak out, after some witty banter, Claudia thinks Jinx is hitting on her, and after teasing him some more and making Jinx uncomfortable with the implication that he is into her, Jinx reassures her that he was in no way attempting to come on to her, because he is in fact, gay.

The rest of the episode shows he and Claudia bonding while they complete their mission, and setting them up as a cool "ATF Gaygent" and his "Girl Wonder" partner.

So SyFy finally breaks the Sci-Fi 5th wall, and casts a Gay character, openly gay, openly gay and male, and openly gay and male and cute, and not an obvious gay stereotype.

Bravo SyFy, I have been a fan of the mancandy on their network since Dr Jackson in SG1, all the way thru to Captain Apollo and others in BSG, oh, and can I get arrested by Sheriff Carter? Please? But now, they are finally taking a chance with making a main re-occurring character openly and unabashedly gay. Now....I just wonder who is going to get cast as his first love interest?

Just watched the second episode of the new torchwood. Fantastic. I thought the air steward was quite funny, if somewhat a bit stereotypical. "It was only one time...." lol

"I'm not gay!"

(Everyone rolls their eyes.)

:)

I've seen that actor before, but none of the pictured actors on IMDB from the second episode look like him (and I don't recall the character's name). It's going to nag me until I figure this out. Going to have to pull up OnDemand at some point this week and rewatch the credits and try to get the steward's character's name.

Oh I can explain that one too (glances at technical manual hidden under the desk).

Nerd Alert!

The warp field does cause gravitational stresses on the ship through the process of compressing and expanding space, see diagram 1 in my earlier post. It is basically creating a small gravity well in front of the ship to "fall" into continuously with the opposite at the rear of the ship to simultaneously "push". The ships structural integrity field is supposed to counteract these stresses in flight, but it does have a limit.

I'm sorry I ignored that in my earlier response which was focused on why the nacelles don't produce thrust. They can be torn off by having too strong a warp field, which would create an extreme difference in the gravitational pull on different parts of the ship. However this would still not warrant a stronger nacelle design as the hull it much weaker and would rip away from the ship first (as in the ST:VOY "Year of Hell" episode). The nacelles would probably be the last thing to go after explosive decompression on all decks, and by that stage, who cares.

When the shows talk about high warp causing a "shearing" effect to damage the nacelles on ships, including the Delta Flyer, it is also possible they are not referring to gravitational shearing forces, but simple aerodynamic drag. The deflector dish creates a field to push aside interstellar gas and dust which would damage the hull if it came into contact. The dish also has to scan ahead of the ship to identify any particles that the field is not able to move in time and target them specifically. This process has a limit too as the dish can only scan so far ahead of the ship, and the faster the ship is travelling, the less effective the deflector field will be. It is known that loss of the deflector dish would cause a ship to be ripped apart by insterstellar particles if it attempted warp speed. Therefore the same would be true if the ship exceeded the maximum speed where the deflector dish was effective.

I could go on and talk about the Bussard collectors on the front of each nacelle and how the field they produce to collect hydrogen could also affect the nacelles at high warp, but I'm hoping the crews know to switch off that field if it were causing a problem, lol.

Nerd Alert Over!

I'm really sorry again, I'll burn the book, and I swear I'll seek professional help.

There have been many references to high warp speeds causing structural stress; e.g., "Then fly her apart!"

Much like the Voyager episode where they were trying to get a shuttle to reach warp 10 and in the simulations it kept tearing the nacelle off of the pylon.

I think they had a similar episode where the Delta Flyer might have had the simulated shearing of the pylon (because it wasn't strong enough).

Or some junk. :3
