I wonder if it has anything to do with the business relationship with LucasArts that has tipped the scales in this direction. Mind you this is purely me thinking out loud.

BioWare has proven they aren't afraid to be inclusive with their games. Both Dragon Age games have had same sex romance options, and according to Casey Hudson (Executive Producer), they are even adding same-sex romance options (finally!) in Mass Effect 3.

I'm pretty disappointed. This was an opportunity for Bioware to show they'd come around on the issue since the days of their (since recanted) "There are no gays in Star Wars" spiel on the forums.
I guess I should have taken that as a promise instead.

It's particularly disappointing given that, per the recent presentation on the Sith Warrior given at Gamescom, male characters, at least, have [flirt] lines with random female NPCs. So I guess there's plenty of the sexy power fantasy bit going on - it's just a matter of who gets to partake of it.

Right now I'm holding out for the possibility of there being some sort of explanation forthcoming, but I'm eyeing the cancellation button as well. I can always use the money on another game. ...More like five games, actually.

I'd figured this was the case from the moment I heard there'd be romance arcs in the game, but I'm still really disappointed. Perhaps if there's enough backlash they'll reconsider at some point down the line, but given the way he said it, I doubt it.

This is truly sad and unfortunate. It becomes a very heteronormative affair, whether it means to or not. And whether intended or not, it comes across, to me, as saying that this MMO is only available to heterosexual folks. When we throw sexuality into a game, especially with options, we are making a statement about what the world/mmo is saying to some degree. So it comes off poorly for me, as a person that was really looking forward to making a character that I wanted, like a dude rogue that could flirt his way around the galaxy, alien, male, and female alike. It hampers my enjoyment to a margin and all the above just makes me have difficulty overlooking.

Enough that, unfortunately, I'll be canceling my preorder.

Hmm. This is a classic example of "it's not what he said, but how he said it". To me that answer was so definitive like they talked about it and decided they weren't going to re-explore the option later.

But honestly I can't say I'm surprised. Star Wars always gave off this stigma to me like Star Wars is for the men, Star Trek is for the boys.

Needless to say, the SGRA thread on the SWTOR website is on fire.

Will I cancel my CE pre-order? Right now I just don't know.

The replies posted are wrote very well so ill just post to echo them.

I'm sorry you've had some bad experiences so far. In my time here they have been very few and far between. Most of the time I leave vent feeling happier than when I joined. We have some amazing Fleeties and im happy you've met some :)

I'm really sorry to hear about the problems you're having in Vent. That's definitely not what it's there for.

I think this is absolutely perfect. When we align ourselves with the greater glbt community, we owe something back to it. Providing a welcoming and safe community to all glbt people is part of that and that's something I've strove to do.

This is very true. Humor from one part of the world to the next can be very different. Even a slight difference in the meaning of a word can cause unintentional offense. The best policy is the assume that no offense was intended and to take no offense.

We have the Code of Conduct and even the Vent Etiquette guide just so that people know how to behave. If you believe people aren't following the rules, reporting those actions to the Admirals is the best way to get it fixed and that will be kept in the strictest of confidence.

Good, I'm very glad to hear it! I'm sure we're all here very sorry to hear things have gotten out of hand on occasion; I seem to have been very lucky and missed any of the drama.

You're quite right that people play to 'unwind and relax', but I suppose with that comes the chance of people coming on who've not had a good day/week/etc. and unintentionally let off a little steam at other people. Also, I think we're very lucky here in that we have such a large (and recently, especially, extremely fast-expanding) community of people who generally get on very well with each other. Considering the size of the fleet, you could almost say it's a surprise we don't have more frequent clashes of personalities.

I'd also ask everyone to consider, as a few of us were discussing in vent only last night, the fact that as such a varied group of people from all over the world, we don't all share exactly the same senses of humour. It can be difficult to always predict exactly how something that is intended as an innocent joke or playful jibe will be taken by everybody listening, especially the target of a joke however innocently meant it may be.

I would sincerely hope that no one in the community has at any point said or done anything with the deliberate intention of upsetting another member of the fleet. With that in mind, I hope this thread serves as a reminder to everybody who uses the fleet chat channels or Ventrilo to be mindful of the diversity of our community; we're not the Borg, our individuality and distinctiveness are both our strength and weakness. Together, we are stronger, as long as we can remember how easy it can be to cause offence, or take offence, by mistake. As long as we remember that, then I hope we can avoid those little sparks that could otherwise escalate into an argument.

Our fleet has always had a very stern policy against anyone who deliberately seeks to hurt others, but for now I hope we can give the benefit of the doubt to anyone who has been involved in any of the recent friction, and I hope all that's needed to put an end to any problems is this warning to all, that everybody has feelings, and it can be difficult to appreciate how those feelings can be hurt when we're all separated by so many miles.

I'm very glad the issue has been raised so we can make sure we're all reminded of why we all joined and love Stonewall Fleet. The fleet admirals have always been kind and approachable, if anyone feels they need to speak to them about any specific incidents or general problems, they shouldn't hesitate.

Much love to you all,

Pete. x

Not great to hear.

I've only been here a few weeks and have had only good experiences on Vent so it's a shame that you haven't.

I'm sure the leadership of the fleet will take what you say on board :)

Wow, I guess I've been missing out by not being in Vent lately. I'm very sorry to hear of your bad experiences. I hope we, as a fleet, can work to improve this.

As the only game in town for GLBTQetc and allies, I think we have a responsibility to ourselves and our community to be open and welcoming. Part of that means not scaring people away.

As human beings, we are not perfect. Slips happen. Sometimes the joking escalates without warning. But I encourage people to speak up if they see or hear something inappropriate or offensive. Or if you're not comfortable doing that, report it to a fleet officer.

Again, I'm so sorry that things have gotten this bad. I hope you'll give us a chance to improve, and show how great and supportive this fleet can be.

Thanks for bringing this up. I know how hard it can be to speak up. Kudos to you for your courage, and your desire to help make things better!
