Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

The trailer does look good. At first I could have sworn that voice was Patrick Stewart's which would have been kinda awesome. I am still getting a rather strong Dark Knight Rises vibe from this trailer though but I'm sure it will be good. If only Abrams would apply the kind of plot intricacy that he goes into Fringe we might see something a lot more true to Trek but still entertaining to a general audience.

My favorite Star Trek movies seem to always be the even numbered ones:
2: Epic and the best revenge plot ever.
4: Lighthearted, funny and with an important environmental message.
6: A perfect example art imitating life in that it mirrored the USA's change in its diplomatic stance against a recently collapsed Soviet Union who had been viewed as an enemy for generations i.e. Federation + Klingons = Khitomer Accords.
8: Bitchin new Enterprise, Borg got a revamp, an awesome space battle that brought us some of our favorite ship ship designs and imho a much cooler-looking uniform.
10: Still good plot, Tom Hardy was a good villian and really did look and sound like a young Picard. Who's jaw didn't drop at the capabilities of the Scimitar?

Watching the Trek reboot always makes me think of seeing a brilliant, kind, charming friend with someone completely wrong for them, that's changed everything about em.

I've used vent for a good while. It's always had good quality audio and been very dependable, I don't personally think we require something else. But that's me.

Having watched the trailer now, I must say I am quite excited to see the new movie. I agree with what a lot of you have said in that Trek seems to have been dumbed down and that there's too much focus on the action nowadays and not enough on the original premise of Star Trek.

I would honestly prefer a film that has a more intellectual appeal, that delves more into exploration and has a good balance of military fiction vs science fiction. But, with that said, I'll hold back judgement until I've actually seen the movie, though I'm sure I will enjoy it like I did the first one.

Profitable but forgettable perhaps? I've seen the '09 film a few times and it's like eating sweets in that if you ignore that it has very low nutritional value it's actually quite pleasurable but does that make it a good?

I'm not 100% sure about the validity of it but I heard that Abrams is only doing a trilogy and then they're going to moth ball Nu-Trek too?

ST The Motion Picture was okay, it had a strong moral about love and it tied into the series too, but it was a little drawn out and special effect heavy. I might be being a bit controversial here but I thought the later TNG films weren't the best, they had stupid ideas like the joystick driven Enterprise in Insurrection creeping in and to me the nu-trek stuff seems like the stupid ideas won over the interesting plot. I guess there's only so much you can milk from the Borg, especially after they were rendered toothless in Voyager, but there were plenty of stories they could have told in a film.

I definitely hear you guys on that, trust me.. the dumbed-down garbage that typically comes out of Hollywood these days leaves a lot to be desired. At the same time though, I feel Abrams has taken the franchise in a bold (yes, many would deem questionable) direction, and I think that his and his writing team's potential could really make it a hit.

I don't read much into posters and ZOMGHYPE-marketing for said reasons. I just know that the 2009 film was a success IMHO and still kept an intellectual edge. in some regards perhaps the '09 film was hard to swallow, but still a success that i ended up watching several times over.

Just have to hope for the best. At least it isn't ST the motion picture.

Oh there'd best be some vodka up in this shindig. B)

Sounds really awesome though. I'm particularly excited about the shuttle race. Y'all can eat my impulse wake. ;)

I agree, Star Trek has always been at its core, morality plays set in space. They're not just about pew pew pew and boom boom and young Hollywood sex symbols. Though I will say I was not mad at Chris Pine in his undies (fans face with hand) :P

Could not agree more with Perspexion.... this poster, and that synopsis, suck any excitement I had for this movie into the darkness... (lol)

It's bad enough that they blew up all of Vulcan in the last one, now this synopsis... "detonates Starfleet," WOW what a compelling line! How the hell did this happen... oh wait, Battlestar Galactica, but instead, it's what, some pissed off terrorist?

I'm all about Trek making comment on the world we live in today, but come on.... the 9/11 analogies are so tired, and the "shout out" to Dark Knight isn't cute, it's ridiculous.

Would I sound old, traditionalist, and a bit Tea Party if I said we need to take back Trek? This is so far from what Gene wanted out of Trek, and I dare say, what most of US, the fans, want out of it.

Rant also over... and to be fair, I've not seen the movie, so it could be the best thing since The Hobbit will be... (lol yeah right!)

It's the way it goes now with Trek, blow it all up and then do a story/film about it, then blow it all up again for the next one then blow it all up again... after all people only pay to see films for the big flashing lights and loud noises.

I am a little bored of nearly every film being treated like it's a sensorium because people can't handle plots more complicated than revenge, it's like the emotional range of the writers has been reduced so significantly that they can only write obvious scripts with obvious outcomes and the only idea of 'ramping up the drama' comes in blowing everything up in some faceless numbers game rather than something more nuanced and character based.

Aaaaaaanyway, rant over.

It sounds like something went quite wrong with your testing, and I'd be happy to take you through a few test runs on a highly optimized server to let you experience what the rest of us do. Believe me, as everyone who's has significant experience with both on this thread has said, there's no comparison.

There's also the question of mumble, do you plan to give that a shot as well? Seems to be on par with TS based on the feedback I`ve heard and read.

And I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people willing to help, including possibly an admiral/FC or two, so think about letting us get involved!
