Exactly! Whatever non-Trekkie CBS executive said, "sure you can blow up the homeworlds of two of the genres most prominent races," needs to be beaten with a pain stick.

J.J. Needs to take his ass to a genre that doesn't mind destroying its planets with advanced super weapons. :silly:

Study: Openly Gay Men Less Likely to Be Depressed Than Heterosexuals

February 01 2013
Here's a link to a summary of the study and author's thoughts:
http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2013/01/29/study-openly-gay-men-less-likely-to-be-depressed-than-heterosexuals

So come out, be happy and healthy!

Here's the original study link:
http://www.psychosomaticmedicine.org/content/early/2013/01/18/PSY.0b013e3182826881.abstract

Methods The study included 87 healthy participants (mean [SD] age = 24.6 [0.6] years; LGB n = 46, 43% women; and heterosexual n = 41, 49% women). Diurnal cortisol sampled at five time points was averaged for 2 days. AL indices were based on an algorithm incorporating 21 biomarkers representing neuroendocrine, immune/inflammatory, metabolic, and cardiovascular functioning. Psychological measures were assessed with well-validated questionnaires.

Results Between-group results revealed no significant differences in symptoms of anxiety and burnout, nor among diurnal cortisol levels between sexual orientations. By contrast, gay/bisexual men unexpectedly had lower depressive symptoms (p = .003) and AL levels (p = .043) compared with heterosexual men. Within-group results revealed that disclosed LGBs had fewer psychiatric symptoms (p values

As usual, I'll reserve judgement until I've actually what he does with Star Wars. But, that said, I usually find myself liking what he does. I really enjoyed the '09 Trek film (though I wouldn't necessarily consider it "canon") as well as Cloverfield and his Mission: Impossible films. Three of my favourite TV series (Felicity, Alias and Lost) were also by him, so I'm at least mildly curious to see what he comes up with. :)

Never been a fan of J.J. less after his first Trek. Honestly I dont think he is talented enough to direct any of the franchises, or a regional TV ad for that matter.

A line from Ghost Busters comes to mind:

"Don't cross the streams."

I'm a little indifferent toward Abrams. There's lots to like about him (he amps up the fun, he has a knack for hiring talented actors and/or is great at directing them), but plenty to dislike (can be gimmicky, story telling is lazy, his 'monsters' and effects always come across as blatant - sometimes even lowsy - CGI and rather generic, etc.).

Ultimately, though, this all boils down to the fact that directing a Star Wars movie and directing two Star Trek films is like crossing the streams, particularly given that they'll be almost back to back to back.

It just shouldn't be done, and now we'll all have to worry about the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Ben Affleck was apparently choice #2. Man, we all missed out.

Re: Reinstatement of Gatekeeper Method

January 31 2013
I was extremely happy when the Gatekeeper method was lifted, but I'm also in favour of its reinstatement for the time necessary for our stockpile to replenish.

Furthermore, I'd suggest something based on my field of expertise: the exchange rate of floating currencies have a variation tolerance over a fixed level. Given 25 as our target, we could decide to give a warning to fleeties at, say, 30 in order to ask for higher efforts to increase the Fleets' stockpiles and to avoid a temporary reinstatement of the Gatekeeper method. I think it would be a good way to increase our collective attention to the fact that common resources come from a common effort.

I quite like the excelsior evem to a degree the refit. THe part I hate about the refit though is the parts they added to the engineering section right next to the deflector dish... I hate that bit. The extra impulse engines I love though, same with the newer warp nacelle look. Fortunatly STO gives me the option for the excelsior look I love.

Bear in mind that I am in Grad School and my commitment to a cruise is directly related to if the cruise is planned outside the semester lines. I voted for option 2 because I believe we should go with a more "mature" cruise company.

The leisure cruise market is full of families and children, and if the more mature of us want to blow off steam or drink and have a good time, we will be limited by the type of cruise.

Norweigian is very supportive of the gay cruise market, it seems a fine choice for a "fun" partying cruise. Carnival is full of little knee-biting kids and their stressed out moms and dads, and frankly I am too impatient of that crowd to give Carnival my business. I could talk endlessly about the best choices for a gay cruise, but it usually boils down to Norweigian, Holland-America, and Crystal for me.

Also, from a physiological perspective, it's reasonable to conclude that at least some of that life will resemble humans. As with most life on earth, our sensory organs are located in close proximity to "controlling" organ, the brain. Also, to interact with its environment, an organism needs at minimum of 2 appendages for mobility and 2 appendages for object manipulation. Of course, an organism can have 4 legs or 4 arms or more. But, 2 of each is an optimal number for efficient function. So while "life" on other planets will be strange, wonderful and terrifying, I also have no doubt that some of it will have many characteristics as humans.

Don't forget there is an intelligent organism with 4 ambulatory appendages and a single manipulation appendage. On the opposite end, there is another intelligent organism with 8 appendages that double for both ambulatory and manipulation. Not only that, 2/3 of the organism's neurons are found in the nerve cords of its appendages. If it weren't for this organism's rather insane breeding habits, well.. one never knows.. It might be able to take over. ;)

That said, there is no reason to assume that other organisms will even have fingers, much less be humanoid in appearance.

One never knows, they may have gone extinct hundreds of millions of years ago. The dinosaurs did, after all, and they were around a LOT longer than us. Billions of civilizations across the galaxy could have risen and fallen to extinction in that time. Alternatively, there could be planets with "dinosaurs" that never went extinct. Still roaming around, failing at the whole "brain" thing in favour of eating each other to death. :3
