You're not kidding about withdrawals! :pinch:  They started about day 3, I tried to log in to any of the games I play and the latency was so bad I couldn't do anything. >1000 on both home and world. I'd try to cast something and it would show up about 10 secs later. It was almost funny, except the npc monsters weren't suffering from the latency and were hitting me bigtime. I died several times in that attempt and finally gave up. I wanted my cable internet!!

Mac - I prefer the Republic side because I tend to equate myself as a good person. I have one toon that I am working on that is going dark side as little change of pace but I am not adverse to playing the Empire side if the majority decides to play it. :)

Iter - OMG! That has to suck! I would totally being having withdrawals. Since I am not in school right now, I play a lot during the week. I am a total gamer so I tend to play all day long. :) Right now, I am limited on the weekends to playing in the evening PST but my entire schedule could change once I am back in Houston. I figured that LoR pulled a lot of people from the game so I was just wondering, in general about the numbers. I am sure once the fervor of LoR dies down, more people will wander back in. I did see Mikial briefly last night as I was close to logging and was doing some space missions.

Re: Which side is more populated?

Most people play Republic side but I believe SWTOR playtime took a hit when the Romulan faction was released for STO. Many of our members are also Stonewall Fleet members and I knew this was going to be a bit of a problem when I saw the advert for the new faction. I, unfortunately, have not been able to log in to play because I have been house sitting for a friend that has satellite internet and it's done nothing but rain the entire time I've been here. Satellites don't work when it rains, the signal dies almost instantly. I will be home soon and will be able to log into play then. What time do you usually play? A lot of our members live in England or Europe so the timing can get a bit weird. I don't know what the reason our US players aren't logging in but that's probably the bunch that plays STO a lot. The Romulan furor should die down a bit as most of them will be at max level soon and hopefully returning to SWTOR. That's if the devs don't do something to piss everyone off again. They've been particularly good at doing that a lot lately....

Which side is more populated?

June 15 2013
I've been playing the game for a couple of weeks now and I am finding that I am usually the only person online on the Republic side. I know the release of the expac for ST:O probably impacted the number of players but, could someone tell me, on average, how many people on line when they are playing?

Thanks. :)

They announced on their facebook page this morning that they got the rights from CBS to do the newer movie ships as special editions. I'm guessing that means they'll be loyalty type things for subscribers, just like the Galaxy-X.

Nicholas--could we get the exact items and colours of those female pants and skirts written out somewhere, since one of the 3,198,179,267 tailor bugs is that you can't save the female lower sections in a fleet uniform? Thanks.

Wildstar posted this on facebook:

Next week is "Pay it Forward Week". You post examples of the contributions you've made to make the WildStar community better place, and we will consider adding you to beta. Creativity, kindness and humor counts. It doesn't matter where you live, just that you've done something to make our already amazing community even more so. Up to the challenge? Prove it! Also, the first person to beg for beta "just because" will not only not be considered, but will go on a list of naughty Nexians.

Go on, get to contributing!

We switched over to the new uniforms a month or so ago, but we haven't updated the documentation just yet. The whole thing is very buggy. You can see how they're suppose to look here.

Fleet Uniform

June 15 2013
I was poking around with setting up my fleet uniform and I found that the presets were bugged. I also noticed a skirt option was listed in the bugged presets, but found no information on the Welcome Center post about how to color skirts and boots and which skirt I should use.

I also noticed a gloss setting. Should this be on or set to matte ?

I saved what i have figured out this far and would love to hear from someone so I can get myself squared away.

Thanks!

Prosy (DerekC) and I (Ampelus) had gotten a few characters to level 80 and were getting a bit bored with the game until we rediscovered WvWvW last night. Well, he had never played, but I hadn't played since the closed beta.

Suffice it to say, whenever we're not leveling our lowbies, we'll be duking it out in WvW (especially during the weekly guild events!).

"No endgame" my kitten! WvW is the most fun endgame content I've played in an MMO. Sprinkle in a dungeon run for variety and I could play GW2 forever.

Re: Model Trains anyone?

June 14 2013
We bought all this N scale stuff. Houses, stores, train, track, and quonset huts. We built this little town on a large piece of wood and even went to radio shack to buy lighting for the town. Oh and we bought lots of people, trash cans, dumpsters. But somehow we didn't finish and it sits in the basement collecting dust and cobwebs. I was actually looking at it the other night and I want to finish our little town.

Re: Twitter vs. Female Protagonists in Video Games.

You have points Chem and so did she and while XboxOne has already been digging it's own grave of late with that stupid constant internet connection requirement I don't know that this first wave of new console games is necessarily a good indicator for such a judgment on her part.

http://femfreq.tumblr.com/

Other platforms and game companies yesterday and today premiered titles with female protagonists. She's also stating that over 40% of gamers are now female. It this is true and there's a market I'll happily change my tune. It's not that I don't support what they're asking for, I just think it's unrealistic to expect any gaming company to possibly alienate their largest demographic on an argument that basically says "it's not fair." They're not going to do anything unless they reward can outweigh the risk. I also read an article that stated that over 60% of casual gamers were now female. Big game and console companies claim there just isn't a market according to their focus groups. Maybe they're lying and playing it safe by trying to hold on to their original customer base which is a dick move to be sure.

As for sexism well I think we'll be seeing a lot of that in games and it's really par for the course at this point. I mean your game characters can actually have sex and reproduce and hire prostitutes and it's been like that for years now. I remember the hullabaloo over Bayonetta because she'd routinely turn naked (because her body suit was actually made out of her own hair) depending on what powers you were using and no it wasn't a glitch. But in her defense she was also a glasses-wearing single Mom :P

If there is is a demographic then it's either foolish and/or cowardly for these companies not to exploit it but there seems to be a lot of conflicting data out there right now that needs to be either proven or disproven and above all brought to light. As a long-time gamer I've never minded playing a female character, in games that had a gender choice I'd normally play both just to see how the storyline would play out. I think the storylines for Kotor 1&2 was far better if Revan was a woman, makes a lot more sense especially in part 2.

Re: Need/Greed Guidelines on Loot

Thanks for the reminder!

I imagine most of the offenses are either A) mistakes (hey, in the heat of battle, we all slip up once in a while) and B) members newer to STFs or the fleet, who are used to the NEED EVERYTHING mentality that the rest of the game's player-base lives by.

Thankfully, whenever this happens in a fleet STF and a reminder is dropped, I've never seen anyone be belligerent about it or keep doing it. That's why this fleet is AWESOME.

Re: Twitter vs. Female Protagonists in Video Games.

June 13 2013
She has a point. While you can list games that have female protagonists, that's a very short list when you compare it to the list of games with male protagonists. The last generation especially has seen very little in the way of female protagonists that are not ridiculously sexualized and whose primary purpose is to titillate a straight male audience.

Additionally, a number of developers have been starting to come out with stories that indicate a rather deep level of sexism in the game industry. Many publishers are hesitant to develop games with a female protagonist because they believe they don't sell well. However, this attitude means they market them less, which means they sell less, creating a vicious self-fulfilling prophecy. Also, Ken Levine of Irrational Games revealed that they were pressured to leave the protagonist Elizabeth off the cover of Infinite (despite it really being HER story) because focus groups showed a cover with just the male protagonist Booker DeWitt was more appealing. Naughty Dog then said they had to really fight to get their female protagonist on the cover of their game, The Last of Us, for the same reason.

However, I'd argue that her complaint is more indicative of a larger problem in both Microsoft's presser and AAA game development at large: an ever-increasing level of homogenization. From brown-grey 'gritty' color palettes to very similar-looking grizzled male protagonists with dark hair and facial scruff, the big-budget games are all starting to look alike as they chase that Call of Duty money (which they won't get, because a lot of those players only play CoD and nothing else). As AAA development becomes more and more expensive, these games are pressured to play it increasingly safe, sticking to focus group results and copying what best-selling games are doing. The lack of strong, female protagonists in these games is one symptom of this homogenization.

Coincidentally, it's why I've been increasingly shying away from AAA games, especially on consoles. There is less and less that interests me as these games become increasingly more like a game I don't enjoy playing and feature characters I don't relate to.
