I only saw the first episode. I have 2 episodes waiting in my DVR. I don't know. The book was over a thousand pages long. They had so much material to work with. I just wasn't very happy with the first episode and the cheesy special effects with the cow and the plane. I was interested that they had a lesbian couple, one who is african american. I'll watch the episodes eventually. :-)

Seems Lionsgate, which I have liked a lot of their movies has responded with a rebuttal to Card but still does not encourage me to see the movie. There are a lot of other things I could support like I did through Kickstarter for BrideGroom and Harbinger. But also since I live in a state, the first in the south to have marriage rights voted by the people, believe that marriage rights are for everyone who have meaningful, committed relationships. Here is the link.

So thoughts? Feelings?

Though, its getting to the point where pretty much everyone has a dark secret.

That is small rural town as far as SK is concerned. Jaws makes people afraid of deep water and sharks,SK has convinced me I would never ever want to do more than visit Maine.

Im liking it, Dave read the story and knows whats going on, but I don't. I hope it stays this good the whole time.

The feel takes me back to "Golden Years".

I started watching it last night. Have about 15 minutes left of the first episode but it looks like it is going to be good!

Actually, I've been rewatching Farscape recently and was surprised to see our good sheriff playing the role of Liko.

OMG!
Is that the episode where he, or Zhaan, kills that two headed bird thing, while Crichton is busy fighting a wizard?

I've been watching random episodes (because the AV club have been doing really great Farscape reviews the past couple of months), but skipped that ep. Although, Defiance could definitely use some Farscape-esque zaniness.

Grant Bowler will always be Constable Wayne from Blue Healers to me. :P

Oh, and just a random Defiance thing I noticed the other day. Rynn is played by Tiio Horn, who also played Destiny in the compellingly awful Hemlock Grove. She was the best thing about that show, other than Landon Liboiron's bum. "Stoopid ass-birds!" :woohoo:

Natasha Lyonne and Laura Prepon are in this? :silly:
Such a strange cast.

Not sure if I can do another "women in prison" show.

In Australia we just had Wentworth, which turned out to be a pretty great remake of Prisoner/Cell Block H.

But this looks interesting. Love Kate Mulgrew, and loved Jenji Kohan's Weeds for a while there. Will have to track it down/wait for the DVDs.

I ended up liking Defiance quite a bit. Not sure whether that's due to the amount of time I've spent playing the game though.

Thought the last two episodes were quite good. Just some spoiler tagged thoughts:

Super excited that we'll get a second season.

^ I thought exactly the same thing.

Since "the gay marriage issue" is now "moot" does that mean Card will back away from NOM? I'm mean, he's thrown in the towel, right?

BTW, my favourite news article about this was at The AV Club LINKY.
Nice and snarky

As I've never read the book, and Harrison Ford gives me the creeps, I wasn't planning on seeing this anyway. Might throw the cost of a ticket to a reputable charity instead.

You heard the man, nobody tell him that they all died and were replaced by androids that look like Bender from Futurama. ;)

He's been releasing music for awhile now. Until now, he's been using the pseudonym Steve Starchild. This was just the first original song he released under his real name. You can check him out on YouTube.

So the first season has come to a close a couple days ago; how's everyone feeling about the series now?

Re: A reason to not see Enders Game or read the books.

Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state.

Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute.

The above statement by Card in response to the boycott is just stunning. I was shocked when I read it. How ignorant can one person be? In 1984, the gay community was still reeling from the AIDS Epidemic that the government largely turned a blind eye to. Striking down of DOMA has done little for those of us still in conservative states like me which still have constitutional amendments against allows us to get married. Not allowing someone to bad mouth you and insult you isn't being intolerant. It's standing up for yourself.

I know I won't be seeing this movie.

So thoughts? Feelings?

I've watched the first three episodes so far and I'm delightfully impressed. So far everything really believable; I was kinda expecting it to be corny and over the top. I like the plot and storyline. Though, its getting to the point where pretty much everyone has a dark secret. I'm looking forward to episode 4.

Can't say that I'm a fan of country music, but I really liked this video. I'm tempted to buy the song just to give my support, even though I don't think I'd ever plug it into a playlist. Gotta respect the man for what he's trying to do though...

I've been pretty disappointed with the coverage on this with articles on NPR and other outlets that let card use the gays are intolerant thing because they won't let us oppress them. This wired article is different, though.

The thing that most of the articles get wrong, and this goes for the whole chik-fullof-hate flap, is that it's perfectly ok to have a despicable point of view that includes believing that gays are evil. What Card and chik's Cathy do goes beyond their beliefs into outright pushing their beliefs on the world through money or direct activism. Card is on the board of NOM who has not only actively campaigned against our rights, but they've also provided money and resources to criminalize homosexuality in places like Uganda where that kind of law can bring the death penalty. So, as David Gerrold basically said, forgive me if I don't tolerate your point of view with your boot on my neck.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the song, as I am by no means a country music fan at all. I did like this song enough that I actually did buy it. I even added an extra dollar just because he's so brave.
