Thank you to everyone who entered our Captain Biography contest! The contest is now closed, and no more entries will be accepted. (The thread has been locked). The Judging panel will need the week to read the amazing entries we've received and will announce the winners here in this forum thread, by Sunday, November 9th!

We'll also be cleaning up this thread by archiving any posts that aren't actual entries, and by copying people's entries directly into this thread, if they were linked elsewhere. This will make it easier on our judging panel in terms of locating the material that they need to review, so don't be alarmed by the thread clean-up!

I had lost most of my teeth by the time I was 12. They waited for me outside the gates and called my parents perverts as my face smashed against the cold concrete. No one really did anything about it, because all on Trill agreed it was my parents fault rather than the ones with the bats and knives. Except mother. She went round to their parents and gave them a piece of her mind. She lost a tooth or two herself.

The doctors at least took pity as they patched me up. They said if I was lucky I wouldn't inherit any of my parents deviance. I replied that I thought I'd be lucky if I was half of what my parents were. My father was in Starfleet defending us from the Dominion and my mother designed flood defences to defend or cities from typhoons. I hoped my father would see me become a captain myself.

My father died when I was 10. He came back home ill with something. We knew it was hopeless a few days before the end. I got in from school and mother was talking with the doctors. She turned to me and tried to tell me, but just burst into tears. I asked if he would come back: as I had been told mom and dad came back in different bodies and remarried before they had me. The doctors looked at their feet nervously. Later my mother told me that because they did it last time they could never have another life again, even if they agreed to stay apart. And that, they would never, could never do. She never left his side till the end. I watched from the door and occasionally brought them drinks. I was too afraid to stay. I didn't know what I was supposed to do. To say. To feel.

After he went, I held his hand. It was cold as a stone. I ran. Ran though the night. That night, asleep, I thought of him. But where there was once a memory of a birthday, there was a cold hand. Where we had built a model starship, there was a cold hand. I never visited his grave, to protect what was left of him in my mind. Mother never understood. We drifted. I thought more of him, I canonised him in my memory as I prepared to go off to Starfleet. My mother's mourning never ended and I became unimportant.

Years later, a lecture was given at my school to potential Starfleet cadets by dad's old first officer. I went up to him at the end to talk about my father but the more he talked of him, the more of a stranger dad sounded. What I had thought was genius; was chance. What he adored; I had never heard of. I saw so little of him, did I even know him? That evening I got a call. Mother had been in an accident.

They didn't know if she could hear. If I had something to say, it should be now. With years of silence behind me, I thought it would all blurt out. It didn't. Just like she never talked to me when dad died. We both could never get our feelings off or tongues. I heard two doctors outside talking, saying a reminder of her crime was the last thing she should have in front of her as final hour approached. The other replied that it gives her an opportunity to repent. I went out there and gave them a piece of my mind. Coming back in, I could see a smile on her face like she had heard. Despite our distance, I am far more like her than my dad, more than I'd ever had admitted. I took her home. I could see her gazing at the pictures of the family on the wall. If she couldn't heard, she could at least see. I took one down, embraced it and laid out next to her. She understood, I thought.

But there was another option. Dad's first officer was a doctor and is more accepting than the spiteful enforcers of this society's taboos. We would give her another life.

Now she understands, and I do too. I finally know first hand the father that was taken from me and the full story of why they did what they did. Life has found a way in this frightened world, though I doubt I'll ever be welcome to walk its egg shell of again. That is my sacrifice and my honour. I see my hero for all his flaws and am proud of who I come from. I will do what it takes to stand up for the downtrodden and remember the soulful face of all tragedy and triumph. That is home, and that is what I pledge to protect.

That concludes my personal statement for academy entry.

Ylis
Nathanite
Federation Ambassador
U.S.S. Socrates

"Ylis is odd."

This is what the cadets whisper whenever the towering amphibioid enters the room. They clearly skipped out on cultural-sensitivity training at the Academy. Apparently, they are also ignorant of the incredible sensitivity of Nathanite hearing.

Sometimes they remark on the Federation ambassador's penchant for speaking in questions, assuming he must perpetually be either confused or sarcastic. It never occurs to them that universal-translator technology is not all it's cracked up to be, that Starfleet has been working a full thirty years to break the code. Only recently has Ylis's chief xenolinguist aboard the Socrates made modest progress in translating the Nathanite language into a mode more appealing to the ears of the average Federation citizen.

Other times, they'll notice how Ylis fidgets, scratching at his diplomatic vestments. Perhaps if they knew that, on Nathanus V, no one wears clothing, and that the handful of Nathanites inhabiting Federation space have overcome great physical discomfort simply to appear in public clothed, then they would treat the ambassador more graciously.

If only they simply knew Ylis's story. Or the story of the Nathanites, for that matter - the supernova of the star Omicron-37 one million years ago, releasing a stream of nathon particles into the orbit of Nathanus V four light-years away, a phenomenon which rapidly sped up the evolution of Nathanties, from creatures resembling the extinct axolotls of Earth to a sentient, space-faring society.

Ylis was ten at the time of first contact, and from then on, he knew his path would carry him through the stars. He begged his three fathers for an educational opportunity that would set him on this path. At twelve, he enrolled in the fledgling Nathanus Institute of Exoanthropology. He graduated with honors at fourteen, and then applied to Starfleet Academy. The powers-that-be at the Academy were hesitant to accept someone so young, but at last relented when the Nathanus Egalitariate informed them of how rapidly Nathanites develop, and that, actually, Ylis was slightly behind the curve for his species.

During his Academy years, Ylis was noted for his curiosity. At first, this was chalked up to his language difficulties, but later, his professors noted that the tall blue student in the back of the class possessed an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. They considered that this curiosity, combined with his relaxed and equanimous demeanor (aforementioned factors aside), made for the perfect Federation diplomat. Thus they encouraged him to enroll in the diplomatic corps after graduation.

But Ylis was not comfortable with the idea of forestalling his dream of exploring space whilst cloistered in yet another set of classrooms and offices indefinitely. So Starfleet struck a compromise, giving Ylis command of his first ship, the U.S.S. Thales, whilst allowing him to develop his career in the Federation diplomatic corps from afar.

Ylis’s first missions took him to the Delta Volanis cluster. Here, he made first contact with several species, including the Totarans, the Rimbalans, and the Maedwii. He also brokered a peace treaty between the Fegrans and the Zaji.

But peace would not be the norm for long: war broke out between the Federation and Klingons in 2408. By this time, Ylis was captain of the U.S.S. Socrates, a powerful Odyssey-class starship built for defense. This commission was originally intended to allow Ylis’s crew to maintain diplomatic arrangements in more dangerous sectors of the Alpha and Beta quadrants. But now, Admiral Quinn called Ylis and his ship to fight on the frontlines for the Federation.

All the while, Ylis was deeply disturbed by what he saw as a needless loss of life. At times, he even contemplated rescinding the Federation citizenship Starfleet accorded him and catching the first ship to the Orellius Sector so he could return to a life of simple contemplation on Nathanus V. But his closest confidantes convinced him to maintain his commission, arguing that a quick end to the war would return peace to both the Federation and the Empire.

Now, the war is behind Ylis, and what lies ahead is the wonders of the Delta Quadrant. Admiral Tuvok has called the Socrates to a diplomatic mission of indefinite duration, allowing Ylis and his crew to resume what they love most – to learn, to discover, and to make peace.

And still, Ylis hears the snickers when he enters a room. No matter. He holds his head high, for he knows how far he has come, and where he’s going.

The Omega Borg (4 Episode Series) by @ItsPyros

November 01 2014
Titles:
Part 1 - The Omega Borg
Part 2 - The Borg Embassy
Part 3 - The Borg Investigation
Part 4 - The Last Borg Standing

Author: ItsPyros
Faction: Federation
Level Requirement: 41+ to do all four

Author Notes: This was my first Foundry set, and has some great reviews. Kind of funny to play now that the "Cooperative" has been introduced; some similarities between the two. Anyways, enjoy. Apologies for the first episode's loading times, I didn't know it would be so slow when I made it. The rest don't do that.

Description (First episode): Long range sensors have picked up Borg transmission signals near Wolf 359, but they do not appear to be tied to the collective. A team from Jupiter Station has been organized to investigate, and you have been asked to escort them. Report to Earth Spacedock and download clearance codes from the conference monitor on the lower level of Ops. Enter Jupiter orbit and meet the team there.

Starfleet Intelligence File #19911025
Laxia
Race: Female Talaxian
Age: 23 Years
Current Assignments:
- Lieutenant, agent in service of Starfleet Intelligence
- in command of the Blockade Runner Escort (aka: Steam-ship) U.S.S. Redshirt
- occasional acting as liaison between the Federation and Talaxians

Laxia was one of the many Talaxians who left their homeworld after a devastating war. She had been a soldier in the war and one of the lucky to survive, but she couldn’t stay on Talaxia anymore, having lost everything but her own skin, including her lover. She worked as a mercenary for several years, but not without principles. Where she could, she helped people in need. Her skills improved from not only being able to stand her own in a fight to smuggling, assassination, engineering and basic science. She discovered she had a knack for engineering and decided to teach herself as much as was possible. It greatly benefitted her former ship, a freighter. It was not meant to be however, as her ship was destroyed by the Vaadwaur. The U.S.S. Amatorius, under command of Vice Admiral Calanthe, destroyed the Vaadwaur ship before they could kill Laxia, but her ship too far gone to save.

VA Calanthe offered Laxia the chance to join Starfleet. Since Starfleet and Laxia shared similar principles, she accepted and went to the Academy. There she followed a crash course in Federation technology. She surprised her teachers however, when she was able to learn everything in two months a normal student would learn in three years.

It was at this point Starfleet Intelligence became actively interested in her and offered her extended trainings in exchange for her services. She accepted this too. Her reasoning was that if she “could do good things on my own and better things with Starfleet, I can do great things with Intelligence backing me up”.

Her enthusiasm, a personality trait of the Talaxians, proved true when she discovered a group of Undine Changelings had infiltrated Intelligence Academy. She was able to contact VA Calanthe and the two of them and VA Calanthe’s away team were able to capture the five Changelings, without them even suspecting anyone knew who they really were.

Both the Academy Director and VA Calanthe were able to convince Intelligence Leadership that Laxia couldn’t learn anymore at the Academy. Laxia graduated early, got promoted to Lieutenant and was sent to the U.S.S. Amatorius. On VA Calanthe’s ship, Laxia was able to increase the power flow through the whole ship, which was quite genius of me, really.

Edit by Vice Admiral Calanthe: Lieutenant Laxia has been put on report for hacking into a secured console and editing classified information. However, she is not wrong and I will leave her edit in.

Several months later, the U.S.S. Amatorius was send into battle against the Vaadwaur, together with several other Federation ships. The U.S.S. Redshirt went in first (it was captured by Section 31 without the flagship knowing, see Intelligence File #20141031 for clarification). VA Calanthe ordered Laxia to beam over with a small away team and take back command, since the U.S.S. Redshirt was vital to the mission. Laxia prevailed and she was allowed to stay in command U.S.S Redshirt. It has been three weeks since she took command and she is moving quickly to her promotion.

Sounds fun, anyone need a team mate? Haven't done this yet so not sure what to expect or really do.

We usually help people find a team mate at the time of the event, if they don't have a specific friend that they'd like to team with, so no sweat there!

[EVENT] Captain Biography Contest!

Captain Onyx of the U.S.S. Rembrandt

Onyx was born in 2386 in a Talaxian asteroid colony, an outpost established by refugee Talaxians some 40,000 lightyears from their former homeworld. As a child, Onyx listened to the stories of one of the colony's councilors, Neelix, about his intrepid adventures on a lost starship which traversed half the galaxy, looking for a way home to a distant planet called Earth.

Having always considered New Talax his home soil, Onyx was one of the few inhabitants who opposed the move of the colony to another asteroid field in the Entaba System. He banded with others who had doubts about the decision and stayed at the former colony site for more than two years after most other Talaxians had left. In 2405, however, Onyx and the others followed in the footsteps of their kin, as loneliness, dwindling resources and hardship finally payed their tribute.

On New Talax, Onyx had learned to maintain old hardware, a skill he picked up from his parents, who made a living by repairing and constructing mining equipment. But it was on the Bataxxa's journey, that he mastered his engineering skills, patching the worn ship together after run-ins with spatial anomalies and hostile aliens alike. In late 2407, en route on the final stretch of their voyage, the Bataxxa was pulled into an ancient Vadwaaur underspace corridor, leading to a remote star system in the distant Beta Quadrant.

Convinced of their soon demise, the crew sent a last desperate distress signal, which was intercepted by a small fleet, led by Admiral Kathryn Janeway. Janeway, who was studying the effects of the Hobus Supernova two decades after its eruption, was delighted to greet a Talaxian ship on her side of the galaxy. She proposed a method to reopen the underspace corridor and grant the Talaxians passage back to the Delta Quadrant. Yet the experiment failed, owing to subspace irregularities, left behind by the shockwave of the Hobus system's dying sun.

Any additional attempts were cut short, as the fleet's resources were diverted to the many war theaters, emerging throughout the region. Onyx and the rest of his friends spent three months on various starships and facilities, helping Starfleet wherever they could. In early 2408, Onyx was granted asylum on Earth and was able to greet his former paragon Neelix via the Pathfinder communication network, exchanging stories on the Bataxxa's illustrious journey and the thriving colony on the other side of the Milky Way. Encouraged by both, Neelix and Janeway, Onyx enrolled in Starfleet Academy, catching up on Starfleet protocols and regulations. Within a year he graduated, owing to his outstanding engineering expertise and life-long experience in the field.

For a last training mission, Onyx was assigned to the U.S.S. Rembrandt, shortly before the Borg invaded Vega Colony. He took command of the ship after her senior crew perished in the attack. After he received a field promotion and was allowed to retain command of the Rembrandt, Onyx swore to support the Federation in its many struggles, in the hope that one day Starfleet might return to its ways of exploration and scientific curiosity. A way, that he had heard so much about in Neelix's stories during his youth.

Biography K.E. Janeway

I apologize in advance for:

- Typos (That´s all the fault of my keyboard, it´s sentinent.)
- Weird grammar (I´m Bavarian after all, weird grammar is part of the job description...)
- That the story isn´t finished yet (How time flies! Sry, the great love story will follow in the next part.)

Greetings, A.M. :)

  • Name: Janeway, Kathryn Elizabeth
  • Rank: Captain
  • Age: 47
  • Affiliation: Starfleet
  • Species: Human
  • Assignment: U.S.S. Bloomington (Odyssey Tactical Cruiser)

Kathryn was born on May 20th 2331 in Bloomington, Indiana, and lived with her parents, Dr. Gretchen and Edward Janeway, and her younger sister Phoebe on the family´s farm in an agricultural park. Since Kathryn was a child she was fascinated about science and spacetravel. Her mother, a mathematician, and her father, a Starfleet admiral, encouraged her to explore things, to ask questions and - of course - to try and find answers. This lead to her decision, to enroll at Starfleet Academy after her highschool. During her time at the academy she discovered that she also liked the command training and layed her focus on the command path to become - one day - a Starfleet captain. All went well for Kathryn until this fateful day when all went wrong...

It should have been just a test flight with a new vessel. With her aboard of the experimental shuttle "Terra Nova" were her father and Lt. Justin Tighe, her fiancé. The flight path was clear, there were no irregular readings, all seemed to be fine. They had just entered the orbit of Tau Ceti Prime as suddenly the alarm klaxons sounded and the shuttle was unmaneuverable. It was obvious that they would go down on the planet´s surface, although the crew tried all to avoid a crash and land the shuttle. But it was too late. The ship crashed and was torn into two pieces.

As Kathryn regained again consciousness she saw that the cockpit section of the shuttle has crashed into the icecover of a nearby lake. And inside the cockpit her father and Justin were trapped. Although she was seriously injured herself, she tried everything to save them. The part of the shuttle which had landed on hard ground had still energy, so she started to work on a transporter device to beam them both out. But time ran out. As she finally got the device to work the cockpit was drown. Her father and Justin were dead. Kathryn was rescued two days later. An orefreighter picked up the signal which was sent from the automated distress beacon.

After the accident Kathryn suffered from a severe depression for months. She blamed herself for her father´s and Justin´s death. She was conviced that, if she had worked faster, both could have been saved. It was her sister Phoebe who finally brought her back to life, even with a theurapeutical inappropriate method. Over six months after the accident Kathryn accepted that it wasn´t her fault and that blaming herself much longer wouldn´t help anybody. She decided to continue her studies at Starfleet Academy and to follow her father´s footsteps. Kathryn gratuated in 2353 from the Academy with degrees in quantum cosmology and astrophysics. Several assignments followed. She was promoted to Captain in 2364. In 2371 she became Commmanding Officer of the U.S.S. Voyager, a Intrepid class vessel. The ship´s maiden voyage should lead them to the Badlands. Kathryn´s mission was to search for a Maquis ship, which had her security chief Tuvok as an undercover agent aboard.

On their arrival at the Badlands the ship´s sensors showed some strange readings. Obviously the ship was scanned by a tetryon beam and in the next moment it was struck by a forceful wave, which caused heavy damage to the ship and the crew. Many crewmembers were injured, the first officer, helmsman, chief engineer and the whole medical crew were killed. And - if this wouldn´t be worse enough - they weren´t in the Badlands anymore. They weren´t even in the Alpha Quadrant, but in an uncharted space named the Delta Quadrant, 70000 light years away from earth. 70000 light years away from their homes, families and friends. The Maquis ship they were searching for in the first place, suffered the same fate. It was also pulled into the same area of space and had lost many members of its crew as well.

There would have been a fast way back through an array, which belonged to an alien entity. The entity, named The Caretaker, protected the Ocampa, a species from the Delta Quadrant, against their enemies, the Kazon. But The Caretaker was dying - which was the reason why he pulled ships into the Delta Quadrant. He was searching for a mate. He hoped that their offspring would proceed to fulfill the duty as a protector for the Ocampa. Kathryn had to make a decision: Using the array to get fast back to the Alpha Quadrant would have meant to leave the Ocampa without protection. Or destroying it to make it impossible for the Kazon to use its advanced technology. It wasn´t an easy decision for Kathryn, after all she was the captain and had a responsibility for her crew. But she also was a Starfleet captain who had to protect the weak and she remembered the words of ambassador Spock "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". Kathryn ordered the destruction of the array.

Both stranded ships faced now a 70-year-journey back to the Alpha Quadrant. Kathryn and Chakotay, the Maquis captain, decided to combine the two crews on Voyager under Kathryn´s command. It wasn´t easy in the beginning but over time the Maquis and Starfleet crewmembers got along. The next years were eventful, they charted and explored the areas they travelled through, they made friends but more often they met enemies who attacked Voyager without reason. There were times when Kathryn just wanted to give up and settle down on a suitable planet. The responsibility for almost 150 crewmembers and her ship, travelling with always tight resources through a more often hostile than friendly quadrant without backup from Starfleet and her loneliless took it´s toll. Starfleet knew that they were out there - Voyager was able to contact them through a Hirogen communications array - but of course couldn´t send any help. The possibility to contact Earth raised at least the crew´s morale. Not so Kathryn´s. She learned that Mark, her fiancé, had married his office assistant because he thought Kathryn was dead. Kathryn felt utterly lonely.

All changed when Voyager encountered the Borg which were at war with Species 8472. All changed when Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero-One, came aboard Voyager.

to be continued...
