The 2364 maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise 1701-D led to a
first contact event that would change the trajectory of Starfleet forever. Q appeared on the bridge of the Enterprise, morphing
through military uniforms across centuries of Earth history. Few people know the truth; first contact with
the Q came centuries earlier than the mission to Farpoint Station
Since the dawn of time, Q planted undercover operatives
throughout every intelligent species in the universe. The best way to truly understand a race is to
live as a member of that society, not merely observe it from a distance. Q recognised this and planted operatives long
before the Iconians dominated the galaxy or Founders sent their offspring from
The Great Link to other worlds. The Q
even had an operative in The Great Link itself.
Q’s appearance on the bridge of the Enterprise showed how
well-informed he was about Earth’s colourful history. He knew the full extent of the horrors of the
past, when humans were sufficiently interesting for Q to appear, and the best captain
for Q to visit. Q told Picard “the trial
never ends” but little did Picard know that the trial began before his earliest
ancestors were even born.
SmearCampaign (aka Q) infiltrated humanity over 6000 years
ago and still lives as a human within Starfleet with his many faces; tactical
expert Horatio, engineering master Constantinople, and science whizz Aesop. SmearCampaign lived as a human through three
world wars, the Eugenics Wars, wars with Klingons, Romulans, the Borg and the
Dominion, witnessing humanity at its worst.
Humanity is most interesting to the Q when it’s exploring
the universe; gathering scientific data, making contact with others, and trying
to enrich themselves philosophically. SmearCampaign
has been given the resources to observe humanity; many ships spanning hundreds of
years and several diverse bridge crews that he commands in different time
periods.
SmearCampaign has flown every ship in Starfleet but has a
soft spot for the Constitution Class refit.
It reminds him of some of his favourite attempts to test humanity. SmearCampaign flung Voyager to the Delta
Quadrant to be modified by a part-machine race and guided it back to Earth as
V-Ger. This was one of SmearCampaign’s
early tests of human diplomacy and problem-solving. His careful manipulation of the situation
caused Voyager’s programming to run virally through the part-machine race, causing
it to exist only to “assimilate” cultures and technology; knowing it would test
humanity hundreds of years later, SmearCampaign had created the Borg.
Captain Kirk was an interesting subject for SmearCampaign to
observe. He was at his best when under
pressure, so SmearCampaign destroyed Ceti Alpha VI, triggering a chain of
events that had Khan chasing Kirk like a galactic game of cat and mouse.
The Q felt that humans had never faced up to the damage they’d
caused their own planet and demanded that SmearCampaign set a test for this
too. He sent a huge probe (that looked
like a tin of dog food) to Earth, wreaking havoc across the planet as it demanded
to communicate with a humpback whale. The
Q intended this to be the destruction of humanity and never envisaged that they’d
successfully pass the test.
SmearCampaign has never revealed the truth about his
Q-origins to any human which has been an exhausting secret to keep. Although the world seems to be more accepting
of a Q, he’s still frightened that he’ll get a bad reaction from the people
with whom he is closest. This means he’s
still living in stealth, flying around the galaxy with his double-life, and hoping
that he’ll one day pluck up the courage to come out as Q.
